According to reports out of Jerusalem today, two additional citizens suspected of spying for Iranian intelligence have been detained by Israeli authorities on suspicion of infiltrating Israeli society as part of Iran’s efforts at infiltration amidst intensifying regional tensions. These arrests demonstrate how Tehran continues its efforts at infiltrating society here with each passing month.
Suspects were detained early Sunday morning following an investigation conducted jointly by Shin Bet (Israel’s internal security service) and the national serious crimes unit of Israel Police, with an arrest made shortly afterwards by Israel Hayom/JPost/The Times/CO.UK +7,
Their activities allegedly include photographing public places and providing sensitive security data to handlers in other countries.
Yoni Segal (18) and Nehorai Omri Mizrahi (20), from Tiberias, have been charged with photographing and documenting security infrastructure at major civilian locations, such as Haifa’s Grand Canyon mall, Big Fashion in Tiberias, Tel Aviv’s Dizengoff Center and Ichilov Hospital, by taking photographs or recording video. For the case of these individuals (aged 18 and 20 respectively) see: JNS.org with +1.0.
Photos were reported as depicting details about security personnel numbers, structural layouts and real-time location data.
Sources claimed the pair expressed enthusiasm for further assignments from Iranian contacts, asking for additional missions from them.
Authorities allege they were also asked by Iran to carry out an assassination of an unnamed Israeli target, for which they would travel overseas for training and received “hundreds of thousands of shekels” as compensation, according to Israelhayom.com (+1).
However, they were detained in Israel before leaving.
Mark Morgain, 33, from Jordan Valley was detained on suspicion of collaborating with Iranian agents. According to him, he retrieved and transported a grenade meant for civilian attack while covertly filming an Iron Dome missile interception during “Operation Rising Lion”, sending this footage back to his Iranian handler (Sources: En.wikipedia.org/wikipedia/1966/63/, JNS.org and Israel Hayom for details). He sent it for viewing by Iranian handler (Wikipedia/wikipedia), JNS.org +13/Wiki/wikipedia+13/869/163/ and Israel Hayom +13).
Following their arrests, prosecutors submitted preliminary indictments. On Monday, Petach Tikva Magistrate’s Court extended Segal, Mizrahi, and Morgain’s remand until July 30th 2025 (jns.org +1 and Israel Hayom).
These incidents form part of a broad pattern that has alarmed Israel’s security services. Prior investigations uncovered multiple suspected spy rings. Security officials say Iran’s intelligence campaign employs social media recruitment, cryptocurrency-based financial incentives and tasks ranging from data collection to plots of sabotage or assassination (reuters.com, Sept 27th 2017).
Shin Bet has described these threats as among the most serious espionage attempts ever attempted against Israel for decades, according to Reuter’s.com and their +6 source.
National Security Concerns Israel is exposed to covert threats within its own population. Iran’s ability to recruit ordinary people – especially on the fringes – as agents poses grave national security risks.
Officials are taking measures to counter espionage and heighten public awareness campaigns against any possible contact between citizens and foreign agents, and to discourage foreign agents from making contact. Furthermore, officials encourage residents to report suspicious activities as part of these initiatives.
What Will Happen Next? Once formal charges have been brought against individuals suspected of spying for Israel, their cases will move through district courts where suspects could face long prison terms under Israel’s anti-espionage legislation. Meanwhile, Shin Bet emphasizes the need for public vigilance.
With Iran-linked activities being exposed, Israeli security apparatuses have now gone into high alert, closely observing recruitment patterns and digital communications. Over time, Israel will likely step up their scrutiny of networks associated with Iran-linked networks within their borders–while regional concerns related to an Iran-Israel shadow conflict are also raised.
