Israel has launched a military operation aimed at seizing Gaza City, prompting human rights organizations to allege it may be part of an attempt by them to cover up war crimes committed during their ongoing military offensive.

Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) announced their decision at a time when international pressure to investigate Israeli military actions in Gaza increased significantly, including heavy airstrikes, targeting of civilian infrastructure, and reports of mass civilian casualties. Both Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch have demanded immediate investigations into these alleged war crimes; Israel has denied these claims stating their military actions are to defend its sovereignty.

Israeli Officials Justify Gaza Occupation
Israeli officials have justified their move to occupy Gaza City with claims that this military occupation is necessary in order to dismantle Hamas military infrastructure and prevent future attacks from militant groups operating there. Human rights organizations, however, are raising alarm that Israel’s true motivation may lie elsewhere – in seizing control of key areas in which critical evidence related to war crimes is said to reside.

“Human Rights Watch is gravely concerned that Israel is using this occupation of Gaza City to block international investigators from documenting the extent of devastation and human rights violations,” stated John Fisher, Director of Human Rights Watch. The destruction of hospitals, schools, residential areas and other civilian targets raises serious questions regarding Israel’s actions under international law – this military occupation seems intended to erase evidence of these violations.”

Alleged War Crimes
Reports from Gaza have documented widespread destruction to civilian infrastructure, such as hospitals, schools and residential buildings being bombed. Al-Quds hospital – one of Gaza’s largest – reportedly suffered direct hits by an Israeli airstrike which resulted in numerous civilian casualties including patients and staff alike.

The United Nations has demanded an immediate ceasefire to ensure humanitarian aid can reach Gaza and civilians trapped in war zones can leave. Israel, however, has continued its military operations despite these requests; analysts fear this might obscure evidence of destruction further.

International Outrage and Accountability
Israel’s move to occupy Gaza City has incited outrage among international stakeholders, especially from within the European Union, which has condemned Israeli military actions as being both “disproportionate” and disregardful of international law. Multiple EU nations have voiced concern that Israeli actions undermine any possibility of holding those responsible accountable for the extensive damage to both civilian lives and infrastructure.

Ruth Finkler, spokesperson for Amnesty International stated, “Israel must immediately cease its occupation of Gaza City and grant independent international investigators access to all affected areas,” according to Ruth. Finkler stated further, “The world cannot remain silent while Israel tries to remove evidence which might bring justice for victims of these atrocities.”

Humanitarian organizations are calling on the UN Security Council to initiate an independent investigation and hold Israel accountable for its actions in Gaza.

Israel’s Defense
Israel has responded to these allegations by emphasizing its military operations are intended to dismantle Hamas, which it considers a terrorist group. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu supported this occupation and stated that its actions fall within international law; further alleging Hamas uses civilians as human shields and weaponry smuggling networks are using civilians as shields.

“Our operations to protect the citizens are unwavering, and they will not be deterred by baseless allegations of war crimes,” Netanyahu stated during a televised address.

As Israel’s military occupation of Gaza City continues, its future remains unknown. No one knows when or if fighting will end and what its long-term ramifications will be for Gaza City’s civilian population. Tens of thousands have already been killed while infrastructure in Gaza City lies crumbled; all while restricted humanitarian access and media coverage further compound those trapped inside its boundaries.

With international opinions divided, Gaza’s future hangs in the balance as Israel maintains its occupation and demands for accountability increase.
