Royal watchers around the globe have taken notice of one of Prince Harry and Prince William’s lesser-known cousins who is stepping forward into public view — seemingly following in Meghan Markle’s footsteps as Duchess of Sussex.
Lady Amelia Windsor, 29-year-old fashion model and granddaughter of the Duke of Kent, recently announced a partnership with a humanitarian organization focused on gender equality and social justice – similar to Meghan Markle’s post-royal career advocacy work.
Amelia, 43rd in line to the British throne, is well known for her appearances at fashion shows and collaborations with ethical fashion brands. However, this week she shared a statement which indicated her desire to use her platform beyond modeling alone: “I’ve long admired the impact voices within and beyond the royal family can have when applied towards positive change,” she stated. “Now is my time to step forward and contribute meaningfully.
She highlighted Meghan Markle’s journey from actress to global advocate as an example of independence, purpose and authenticity.
Sources close to the royal family report that Amelia recently met with several non-profit leaders and is considering producing a documentary series highlighting women’s empowerment across the Commonwealth – similar to Meghan and Harry’s Netflix projects.
Media reports and speculation over Amelia’s increasing public presence has reignited tensions within the Royal Family, particularly since senior royals tend to avoid politically charged topics.
Royal commentator Ingrid Seward noted, “While Lady Amelia has long been perceived as a modern royal with fashion credentials, her recent move into activism may cause ripples within Buckingham Palace.”
Buckingham Palace has yet to make a statement about Amelia’s announcement; insiders speculate her independent status allows more flexibility than Prince Harry or Meghan ever did when serving as senior royals.
Lady Amelia’s decision comes at a time when younger royals are increasingly forging roles outside traditional expectations. Prince Harry and Meghan’s decision to step back from royal duties and focus on independent charitable and media ventures in 2020 caused shockwaves, but has since become seen by some royal experts as an ideal model of how to reconcile heritage with modern relevance.
“Lady Amelia’s actions indicate that the royal brand is changing – not collapsing,” stated Dr. James Kington of University College London. She is taking steps towards taking on an increasingly globalised and socially responsible role that resonates with younger generations’ values.
As Lady Amelia embarks upon her next chapter, many will be closely monitoring her decisions to gauge whether they will bring her closer or further away from royal circles.
Now, Meghan joins an increasing list of royals redefining what it means to hold onto royal titles in modern society — with purpose, independence and perhaps some Markle-esque courage.
